History and Inspiration of
The World's Most Hi-Tech Homes
Our house was originally built in 1850. It's located among historic farmland and forest patches of Northumberland County, Virginia. Inspectors declared it still had "good bones" (the foundation and structure were still sturdy). But like most relics of American history, to make the house livable, we had to update and remodel practically everything.

It sat on a 16.5 acre lot that was just screaming playground, happiness, fresh air and accessibility to stores and schools. With an 1,000 Mbps broadband connection for super duper high-speed internet, it was impossible to say, "No, thank you."
​So, a project management plan was written for the electricity, water, plumbing, insulation, walls, ceilings, bathroom, floors, etc. The cost-benefit analysis was also needed for a budget. Then, a business plan to determine the investment, with the aim to increase the commercial value of the property.
Lo and behold, we constructed not just a home but also a template to create "The World's Most Hi-Tech Home."
Later, the template became a first draft of THE book.
​(Writing my doctoral dissertation while being a DIYer inspired a multi-tasking mind to reinvent the American home).
The goal is not to tear down and replace everything.
Instead, we wanted to keep as much as we can to retain the "farm house" ambience. If a house built in 1850 can withstand another 175 years and another 175 years, and another, we knew American creativity had to partner with innovation.
Using search engines and Artificial Intelligence did not give us cutting edge Hi-Tech Homes. A global review of the research literature did not help either. Even a deep dive into the so-called best of the best Schools of Architecture, Urban Planning, Interior Design, Civil Engineering, among many others, all over the world didn't enlighten us either.
The technologies of the 21st century and their ceaseless and perpetual evolution can match any much-cherished history with priceless innovation. We've proven it.
The American Dream is real.
But the house is not done. I don't even think it'll ever be done. Now it's become an on-going architectural experiment, a designer's play place, dogs' paradise, an entrepreneur's office, a builder's laboratory, a gardener's solar and electronic plot, and a symbol of open-sourced ingenuity (thanks, to all of you builders and dreamers out there).
